Apologies to my friends planning to spend time with me this evening. It’s been one of those days. You know the kind. Not a bad day. Just not a great day.

Suppose I’m a bit spoiled. Most days are good enough that I don’t notice how good they are until I have one of these days.

It’s like walking around in a haze most of the time. Concentrating on the task at hand and whatever is right in front of me that needs immediate attention. Not noticing how close to the edge of the abyss I’m standing until one foot slips off, dangles in empty space, and almost pulls the rest of me over.

Fortunately, I have exceptionally good balance. I always manage to catch myself before I fall. Then I dust my self off, sit myself on a shelf for a while, and work up the guts to go back into the fray. It takes a few hours. Sometimes a day. Sometimes two.

The bad days come less often. The repairs come much quicker. By tomorrow I’ll most likely be my old chipper self again.

But until then, I’m going back to bed.

Temperatures are soaring in the low hundreds. I’m tempted to try the frying an egg on the sidewalk thing. Is it possible?

In spite of being surrounded by shade trees, by seven-thirty in the morning, it was 87 degrees inside my house. Thank goodness, the air-conditioner repair man came early. All it needed was cleaning. Dirt gets inside the outside unit and clogs it up.

Can you clean those things with a water hose? Will it short out?

It’s nice and cool in here now. Too hot to sit outside on the patio . And too muggy to sit out there after dark. Still, I can tolerate heat better than cold.

Need to get back to work. Contest to enter. Book proposals to write. Trips to prepare for. I’m becoming quite the traveler. One conference after another.

Got it. 

Decided on a traditional three leaf shamrock instead of a four leaf clover.  It didn’t hurt nearly as much as I anticipated.  I nearly fell asleep.

It looks pretty good but I may go back and see about having some highlights put in it.  At the moment it’s only green and black.  I think it needs a little yellow.

I’m going to a poetry reading this evening.  Baby Brother may object.  He’s gotten spoiled to spending his Friday nights at Borders.  Dragging him to a poetry reading will be good for him though.  A little culture never hurt anyone.  May put them to sleep but doesn’t hurt.

My birthday was great. The girls at work made a big deal. My best friends’ Dion and Lisa took me out to eat at Olive Garden and then to see Superman.

The movie sort of sucked. It was slow, boring, and pretty much a waste of time and money.

Before going to eat we stopped at a tattoo parlor. Tattoos are legal in Oklahoma now. D and I are going back this afternoon for tattoos. I’m getting a four leaf clover. I don’t know what D is getting.

Conestoga is coming up at the end of July and I’m really excited. There are going to be some wonderful speakers. Rumor has it Selina Rosen might even wear a dress and heels. This I gotta see.

Lance Havermale will be there.

Jennifer and I are taking our sons. They’re the same age and I hope they get along as well as Jen and I do.

Yea! I’m going to Conestoga www.sftulsa.org/conestoga in Tulsa July 28-30, 2006. I can hardly wait. It’s a fantastic science fiction convention and tons of wonderful writers will be there. It falls on my weekend to work but, bless her heart, Sue volunteered to work for me.

I’m trying to convince my friend Jennifer DiCamillo to join me. She wants to come but isn’t sure she can make it. Dion can’t come. She has to work. I can’t talk her into playing hooky. A lot of my friends will be there. Some I haven’t seen in a couple of years. These events are always so much fun. Wish Keith R.A. DeCandido was coming. But I have it on good authority that he’s just too bloody busy.
